2 killed in city road crash

Two members of a family were killed and three others injured in a road accident in the capital on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Salma Begum, 60, and her granddaughter Rinta, 12.

The injured are Salek Mia, 32, the auto-rickshaw driver and son of Salma and her granddaughter Rima, 10.

The accident took place when a running truck hit an auto-rickshaw in Pump House area at Rupnagar in the capital.

Critically injured four persons were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital where Rinta died. Salma was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, Mohammad Lokman, sub-inspector of Rupnagar Police Station, said.

Their bodies were kept at the morgues of the two hospitals for autopsy. The injured are undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, the officer said.

Police are trying to arrest the truck driver and seize the truck, he said. Rinta and Rima are sisters. Their mother died several years ago. Thereafter, they began to live with their grandmother.

Riding her son’s auto-rickshaw, Salma along with her two granddaughters were going to visit the house of her another daughter Sheuly.
