Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said the party would not participate in the upcoming Union Parishad election.

“We thought the government would hold a fair election in local government unit polls and the Election Commission (EC) would arrange fair election but the incidents that took place in the upazila, municipality and union parishad elections were so frustrating that BNP decided not to take part in the upcoming Union Parishad election,” he said.

The BNP leader made the announcement while addressing a press conference at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office in the capital. The press conference was arranged to brief the decision of the party’s standing committee meeting held on Saturday.

"Implementing the agendas of the incumbent government is the main task of the EC. Besides, BNP always opposed the decision of party-based nomination in the local government elections. So in these circumstances, we have decided not to take part in any upcoming union parishad elections," he added.
