Defending champions Bangladesh Navy retained title of Mujib Barsho Shaheed Smriti Hockey beating Army by 3-1 goals in the final at the Maulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium in the capital on Saturday.

Bangladesh Hockey Federation dedicated the meet to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Mujib Barsho.

Captain Rasel Mahmud Jimmy and Roman Sarker scored one goal each in the 27th and 58th minutes while Khorshedur Rahman added one from a penalty corner in the 37th minute for the team. Manoj Babu scored the consolation goal for Army in the 42nd minute.

Jimmy, who was also a national team captain, told the reporters after the final that the federation should include more teams to make these domestic leagues more competitive. “The federation should include more teams to make these domestic leagues more competitive. However, we won Victory day Hockey and Shaheed Smriti Hockey successively. We are targeting Bangladesh Games now, we want to continue the winning streak,” Jimmy said.

Navy coach ANM Mamunur Rashid said that these domestic leagues would be helpful for both the national team and U-21s to get prepared for their upcoming international assignments.

“Players from the national team and U-21 took part in these competitions. These competitions will be helpful for the national team and U-21 players ahead of their upcoming international competitions. These leagues will also help improve their fitness levels,” Mamunur said, who is also the head coach of U-21s.  In the last edition, Navy emerged unbeaten champions beating Army by 6-3 goals in the final at the same venue in February last year.

Among other teams, Air force and Kamruzzaman ended 3rd and 4th respectively. BKSP failed to collect any points.

BHF president and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat and other members were present there.
