Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim on Tuesday said there is huge potential in the livestock sector to earn foreign exchange through export of animal products derived from meat, eggs and milk.
“The field of work in this sector is much more extensive. It is possible to eradicate poverty, create entrepreneurship, eliminate unemployment, mobilize the rural economy and provide huge supply of human nutrition and meat needs through this sector,” the minister at a workshop orgainsed by Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) at a city hotel.He also said the livestock sector can play huge role in improving the socio-economic development of the country.
“Once upon a time there was a crisis of sacrificial animal in the country as cattle were not been imported. But, in the last few years supply of sacrificial animals have been surplus after fulfilling the demand,” he said.
Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) chairman Dr Nathu Ram Sarkar presided over the inaugural workshop on Zoonoses and Transboundary Disease Prevention and Control Project.
Rawnak Mahmud, Secretary of Fisheries and Livestock Ministry and Dr Abdul Jabbar Sikder, Director General of the Department of Livestock, were the special guests at the event.
