Bus Route Rationalisation (BRR) Committee on Tuesday proposed increasing the bus fare to Tk 2.2 from Tk 1.7 per kilometre on the Ghatarchar-Kanchpur Bridge route.
Bangladesh Road and Transport Authority (BRTA) came up with the proposal, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, also the convener of the committee, told reporters after the 16th meeting of the committee held at Nagar Bhaban. The mayor said that the proposal would be sent to the ministry for approval. He said the proposal has been made considering the interest of bus owners and passengers. He hoped that passengers would get better services.
The committee is working to limit the bus route by revising the earlier routes and Ghatarchar-Kanchpur route is the first to go under pilot operation. It is working to decrease the number of bus companies which, they believe, will help end the fierce race between buses plying on the same routes.
“A draft over making joint venture agreement for the route would be prepared by next week. The owners will fix terms and conditions and it will be presented in the next meeting,” DSCC Mayor Taposh said.
A total of 155 buses are operating under two companies which will be merged into one under the joint venture agreement. Taposh said that the governor of Bangladesh Bank has given verbal consent to give bus owners a loan of Tk 1 billion on easy terms.
