Students of Rajshahi University (RU) and Islamic University (IU) staged protests on their respective campuses on Sunday demanding reopening of the university halls.

RU students demonstrated for a second straight day on Sunday and gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the authorities concerned to open all dormitories of the university.

They paraded behind the central library of the university and held protest in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence.

They also threatened to orchestrate a tougher movement unless the university authorities open the residential halls within 24 hours.

RU Proctor Professor Lutfor Rahman told the media that they can’t reopen the campus and halls without a government order.

On the other hand, a group of IU students gathered at Daina Chattar area around 11:00 am and staged a protest rally shouting different slogans to press home their demand.

The protesting students paraded on the main roads of the campus before it ended in front of vice-chancellor’s residence. Later, they held a rally there. The university authorities went to the spot and tried to calm them down.

IU Vice-Chancellor Prof Shaikh Abdus Salam said without directives from the government and the University Grants Commission, they can’t take any such steps.
