4 get maiden Int’l Mother Language Award

Three persons and an organisation on Sunday received the maiden International Mother Language Award for their contributions to preserving and promoting mother languages nationally and internationally.

Education Minister Dipu Moni handed over the award to the winners at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who joined the ceremony via videoconferencing from her official Ganabhaban residence.               

The awardees are national professor Md Rafiqul Islam and Khagrachhari’s Jabarang Welfare Association’s executive director Mathura Bikash Tripura at the national level and Uzbekistan researcher Islaimov Gulom Mirzaevich and the Activismo Lenguan or Language Activism of Bolivia at international level.

Professor Rafiqul Islam has got the award for practicing and promoting Bangla language at national level.

He is the first Nazrul Professor of Dhaka University’s Bangla Department and first director of the Nazrul Research Institute.

The veteran linguist took part in the 1952 Language Movement actively and clicked rare photos of the movement.

Mathura Bikash Tripura, executive director of Jabrang Welfare Association in Khagrachhari, has been awarded the award for his tireless works to protect the mother tongues of the small ethnic groups of the country.

Uzbekistan researcher Islaimov Gulom Mirzaevich received the award for his outstanding role in research, practice and culture of mother language protection, promotion and revitalisation in Uzbekistan and abroad.

And the Activismo Lenguas or Language Activism of Bolivia, an online initiative, is recognised for its support towards networks of indigenous language digital activists in Latin American countries.

The biennial award has been launched this year.
