Prof Mahmood’s death mourned

University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah, Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman and DU former Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique on Friday expressed profound shock at the death of Prof Dr ABM Mahmood, a retired professor of history department of Dhaka University.

Prof Dr ABM Mahmood passed away at the age of 83 while undergoing treatment in a city hospital on Thursday.

In a condolence message, UGC chairman said “Prof Mahmood was an internationally renowned historian, researcher and a devoted educationist and historian in British-Indian.”

“An honest, dedicated and secular teacher Dr Mahmood was very popular among the teachers, students of the university. He played a significant role in expanding education and research as the senate, Syndicate member and chairman of the Department of History of DU, and a UGC professor,” Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman said.

DU former VC Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, also chairman of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), said Prof Mahmood had multifaceted contributions to uphold the spirit of the Liberation War in the country.

His death is an irreparable loss to the field of the country’s education and research in history, he added.

They also prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and extended their deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
