AL factions clash in jute minister’s home in Rupganj

Two groups of the ruling Awami League were locked in a clash in Rupganj of Narayanganj on Friday over establishing supremacy, leaving 15 people injured.

The clash ensued between the two groups around 10:00am in presence of Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi at his Ruposhi residence in Rupganj.

Witnesses said AL Kanchan municipality unit general secretary Golam Rasul Koli along with his supporters went to meet the minister in his residence while his rival and Jubo League municipality unit organising secretary Ponir Hossain also went there.

At one stage of a brawl, both the groups were locked in a clash that left 15 injured, including Ponir Hossain, Hasan, Sharif, Faruk and Rashed.

Later, the situation brought under control by the intervention of Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi and local AL leader Habibur Rahman Habib.

Locals said there is a longstanding conflict between AL leader Koli and Jubo league leader Ponir in Rupganj over establishing supremacy.       

The supporters of Koli on February 15 carried out a sudden terrorist attack on the office of Ponir at Birab Bazaar in the area and also vandalised a motor bike and furniture of the office.

Protesting against the attack, the supporters of Ponir also held a protest procession in the area.

Finally, Ponir along with his supporters on Friday morning went to the minister’s house to complain of the incident.

But they saw activists of Koli group there. At one stage of a brawl, the rival groups were locked in a clash that left 15 people injured.

Panel mayor Ponir Hossain said, “The incident happened at the house of the minister and in his presence. So, he will resolve it.”

Officer-in-charge of Rupganj police station Mohsinul Kadir said, “I don’t know about the incident. Action will be taken if we get any written allegation.”
