Transport workers allegedly carried out attacks on some messes of students of Barishal University (BU) early Wednesday, leaving at least 25 students injured.

The attack prompted the agitating students of the varsity to block the Barishal-Kuakata highway. The blockade halted the movement of public transport, causing immense sufferings for passengers.

A vacant bus of Kuakata Paribahan near the university was set on fire around 11:00am.

A group of transport workers equipped with sticks, iron rods and sharp weapons attacked the students at their messes at Rupatali Housing area in Barishal city around 1:00am. Being informed, policemen removed the attackers from the spot around 2:00am. The injured were admitted to Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Nurullah Siddique,  SM Sohanur Rahman,  Ahsanuzzaman,  Fazlul Haq Razib, Alim Salehi, Ali Hasan,  Rajon Hossain, Mahbubur Rahman, Mahadi Hasan Emon, Mirza Howlader and Sajib Sheikh were among the injured.

Prof Dr Md Sadequl Arefin, vice-chancellor of the university, visited the injured students in the hospital and declared that the costs of treatment of the students will be borne by the varsity authorities. A group of students met the vice chancellor around 11:30am. During the meeting, they put a three-point demand.

The demands include bringing the attackers to the book as soon as possible, filing a case against the attackers by the varsity administration and taking steps to ensure security of non residential students. The students said they will continue taking position on the road until their demands are met.

After the meeting with the VC, the students brought out a procession and advanced towards Rupatali Bus Stand. But, policemen prevented them when they reached Kathaltala. The VC said, “The attack on the students is extremely crappy. We have heard the demands of the students and are trying to implement.”

Students said Rafiqul Islam, an employee of BRTC bus counter at Rupatali, assaulted two students of the university on Tuesday.  After hearing it, a big number of students blocked the bus terminal for two hours since noon.  Later on, the students moved away from the terminal after the arrest of Rafiq.

Around 1:00am, some transport workers carried out an attack at a mess of the students in Rupatali area.

As the information of the attack spread on social media,   students of other messes rushed to the spot.

Afterwards, about 60 to 70 transport works equipped with sticks and sharp weapons attacked a number of messes of the students.
