6 to die for killing 4 of a family in Kurigram

KURIGRAM: A court here on Tuesday sentenced six people to death for murdering four members of a family in Bhurungamari upazila of the district in 2014.

District and Session’s Judge Md Abdul Mannan pronounced the verdict.

The convicts are Mamtaz Uddin, Nazrul Islam Majnu, Amir Hamza, Jakir Hossain, Hasmat Ali and Jalal Gazi. Of them, the latter was tried in absentia.

Hearing the verdict, the five convicts vandalised the dock and hurled abuses at the judge.

The court also acquitted another accused, Naimul Islam, as charges brought against him could not be proved.

According to the prosecution, a gang of masked people stormed the house of Sultan Mia at Diadanga village of Bhurungamari on January 14, 2014 night.

They hacked Sultan, his wife Hazera, and granddaughters Romana and Anika to death.

Sultan’s son Hafizur Rahman filed a murder case with Bhurungamari Police Station the following day.

According to the police, Mamtaz had been at loggerheads with his younger brother Sultan Mia.

He struck a deal with the five other convicts for killing Sultan and his family members in exchange for Tk 5 lakh and one bigha of land.    

Kurigram’s Public Prosecutor Advocate Abraham Lincoln said the trial proceedings completed speedily after charges were pressed against the accused. “Justice was served through the verdict.”
