The government has taken initiatives to modernise the agriculture sector through implementing different projects and recruiting skilled agricultural engineers, Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque said on Saturday.
"A project worth Tk 30 billion has been taken for agricultural mechanisation," the minister said."Some 284 agricultural engineers have already been trained to accelerate the mechanisation of agriculture," he added while addressing a discussion of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) in Mymensingh.
BAU Vice-Chancellor Prof Lutful Hassan presided over the programme, said a press release.
The minister said that the role of agriculturists in country’s agricultural education, research and expansion is universally recognised at present time.
The agriculturists are contributing to the development of agriculture through inventing new agricultural technologies and techniques in various fields of agricultural research which made Bangladesh self-sufficient in food, he added.
He also called upon agriculturists to play a more effective and vigorous role in maintaining the food supply of the growing population in the future.
State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid, Mymensingh City Corporation Mayor Ekramul Haque, Senior Secretary of Ministry of Agriculture Md Mesbahul Islam, Food Secretary Dr Mosammat Nazmanara Khanum, Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Raunak Mahmud and officials from BAU, among others, were also present on the occasion.
