6 held over robbery

Detective police have arrested six alleged muggers in the capital and its adjoining areas.

A team of DB Ramna Division nabbed them on Thursday and Friday in relation to snatching Tk 3.5 million from a man at Shahbagh in the city on February 7.

The arrestees are Mazharul Islam alias Rakib, Jahirul Talukder, Abu Bakar Siddique alias Khoka, Selim alias Lengra Selim, Mohammad Lalon and Selim Mia.

Two machetes, two knives, Tk 2.5 lakh in cash and some other things were seized from them.

AKM Hafiz Akhter, additional commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), briefed journalists at the DMP Media Centre on Saturday.

The officer said that a certain Shahidul Islam was going to deposit Tk 3.5 million to the bank at Shahbagh from Tanti Bazar in Old Dhaka on February 7.

When he reached the east side of T&T Exchange at Shahbagh on a rickshaw between 2:30 pm and 3:00 pm, eight to ten miscreants intercepted him and took away his bag containing the money after injuring him, he said.

Later, the victim filed a case at Shahbagh Police Station. After the incident, DB Ramna Division began to investigate the case and found out about the muggers.

Afterwards, the policemen arrested them with the support of technology.

Hafiz Akhter said the arrestees confessed that they were complicit in the robbery.

Police are now hunting for other muggers involved in the incident.
