Around 96 percent of buildings in the capital have been constructed in violation of building code of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), said Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam.

He made the comments on Saturday while speaking at a seminar organised by Urban Development Journalists’ Forum (UDJF) at CIRDAP auditorium in the capital.

Tazul said, “Officials of RAJUK are involved in violation of the law. They are not discharging their duties properly.”

He said that the government took a project to launch water transport from Hatirjheel to Banani and United Hospital.

Tazul also said that they would free the banks of all canals which are now in the grip of illegal grabbers.

“Some grabbers have produced fake documents, occupied the land of canals and built high rise buildings there. The government will take action against them.”

President of UDJF Motin Abdullah and general secretary Sohel Mamun, Dhaka South City Corporation Panel mayor Shahid Ullah, urban planner Prof Akthar Mahmud, architect Iqbal Habib and RAJUK planner Ashraful Islam spoke on the occasion.
