Govt to import 500MW electricity from Nepal

The government is in final stage to import 500MW of electricity from Nepal using Indian corridor.

State minister for Power and Energy Nasrul hamid on Thursday disclosed it at a webinar on ‘Cross Border Power Trading’ jointly organised by Bureau of Energy Resources under US state department and Deloitte, USA.

“We are now importing 1160MW of power and another 500MW of electricity import from Nepal on final stage,” Nasrul said.

He added the government is also negotiating to import electricity from Bhutan too.

According to power system master plan, Bangladesh has a target to import 9000 MW of electricity in 2041. He said the cross border power trading is cost effective and environment friendly.

The minister said the government has emphasised on regional and sub-regional cooperation on power and energy.

 Power Secreatry Md Habibur Rahman, US Embassy to Dhaka Deputy Chief JoAnne Wagner and Power Cell Director General Mohammed Hossain attended at the webinar.
