4 killed in road, train accidents

At least four people were killed in separate road and train accidents in Dhaka and Chattogram on Thursday.

In Dhaka, an airport-bound train ran over Nirod Baran Roy, 60, ex-principal of Moghbazar branch of Ispahani School and College, in Karwan Bazar rail crossing at around 10am while he was heading towards Moghbazar on foot, leaving him critically injured.

He was immediately rushed to DMCH where he succumbed to his injuries two hours later, said DMCH police outpost’s in-charge Inspector Bachchu Mia. The body was kept in morgue and the railway police were told to take measures in this regard, Bachchu added.

In another incident, a 45-year-old unidentified auto-rickshaw driver was killed while a speeding microbus knocked him down in Demra area at around 12:30pm, leaving him severely injured, said Demra fire station’s team leader Rashedul Haq. “He was whisked-off to the DMCH where on-duty doctors declared him dead,” Rashedul said.

In Chattogram, two persons, including a police constable, were killed and two others injured in separate road accidents at Sitakunda upazila in the district.

The deceased were identified as constable Mushfiqur Ahmed, 21, of Chattogram district police, and Md Rakibul Islam, 19, of Ishwarganj upazila in Mymensingh.

Sources said an unidentified vehicle hit a motorbike of Mushfiq in Royal Gate area under the upazila while he was going to the district police lines at around 6:00am, leaving Mushfiqur dead on the spot. The body was sent to CMCH morgue, they said.

On the other hand, a covered van hit a pick-up van in Siraj Bhuiyan Rastar Matha area under the upazila at around 8:30am.

The deceased were identified as covered van driver Rakib.
