10 killed as truck rams into bus in Jhenaidah

At least 10 people were killed and 30 others injured as a truck collided head-on with a passenger bus in Barbazar area under Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah on Wednesday noon.

“Nine passengers of the bus died on the spot and another succumbed to his injuries in Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex,” said Mamnur Rashid, an official of Kaliganj fire station.

Two of the deceased were identified as Reshma Khatun, 25, of Chuadanga and Uzzal Hossain, 48, of Magura.

The identities of other deceased could not be ascertained immediately.

On information, police and firefighters rescued and sent at least 10 victims to different hospitals.

In another incident, four people were killed as a minibus hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Teknaf of Cox's Bazar in the morning.

However, the identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

“All the victims were auto-rickshaw passengers,” said Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Teknaf police station. Besides this, a youth was killed as a bus hit him from behind at Jatrabari intersection in the capital on Wednesday, police and hospital sources said.

The victim was identified as Nurul Haque of Pirojpur district.  “The accident took place when Nurul was walking along the road,” said Inspector Md Bachchu Mia of the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Injured Nurul was rushed to DMCH, where doctors declared him dead at about 9:30am. The body was kept at the morgue. Police detained two transport workers for interrogation. Sources said the accidents occurred due to reckless driving.
