Bangladesh Army Chief meets his US counterpart

Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed, who is on a visit to the United States of America (USA), has paid a courtesy call on Chief of Staff of the US Army General James C McConville.

He visited various military installations which include the US Army Cyber Command, Intelligence and Security Command, Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), the Maneuver Center of Excellence, Georgia and Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC), Louisiana.

General Aziz Ahmed also called on United States Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of the Secretary of Defense for Policy-South and Southeast Asia and representatives of the Defense Security Co-operation Agency.

During the meeting, the Bangladesh Army Chief expressed the hope that the United States would continue to play an important role in resolving the Rohingya crisis.

In particular, he sought full cooperation of the United States in the speedy repatriation of Rashed Chowdhury, a fugitive accused of Bangabandhu’s assassination.

On Tuesday, a guard of honour was given to Gen Aziz on behalf of the US Army Chief.

Later, in a meeting between the Chiefs of Army Staff of the two countries, various issues of bilateral cooperation and future plans were discussed in detail.

During the talks, the Bangladesh Army Chief laid emphasis on the military expert exchange between the two countries, the deployment of Bangladeshi peacekeepers in the United Nations and the cooperation of the US Army in enhancing the capabilities of Bangladesh Army in counter-terrorism and cyber warfare.

He hoped that the participation of the Bangladesh Army in various military trainings of the US Army will increase in the future.

The army chief is also scheduled to meet senior UN officials this week.
