Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will hold rallies in six metropolitan cities in the country to press home their demand for free and fair elections.
In a press conference held at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Friday, BNP joint secretary general Md Mujibur Rahman Sarwar made the announcement.“We have taken the decision to hold six rallies in six metropolitan cities across the country. We would like to present matters of vote rigging, people’s voting right and restoration of democracy,” he said.
As per the decision, the party will hold rally in Dhaka north on March 3 and in Dhaka South on March 4, while in Rajshahi on March 1, in Khulna on February 27, in Barishal on February 18 and in Chattagram on February 13.
Mentioning the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s speech underscoring the necessity of a strong opposition party for democracy, Sarwar said, “We should not be hindered from going to the people. We want to hold our rally as a democratic right.”
"No election will be fair under this incumbent government. In the rallies, we will say those words to the people. We demand election under a neutral government, to give back the voting right to people,” he said.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and five mayoral candidates in the city corporations polls- Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, Dr Shahadat Hossain, Tabith Awal, Ishraque Hossain were also present in the press conference.
