The Creator of all existence has been sending messengers and prophets to guide human beings ever since the dawn of mankind, according to the Qur’an. The Qur’an only names some of these guides, such as Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (pbuh). The last and final messenger is Muhammad (pbuh) and the last and final guidance is the Qur’an itself.
The Qur’an claims that it is a holistic and comprehensive guidance for the individual and collective existence of human beings issuing from the all-knowing Creator of this universe. If humanity chooses to follow this guidance then it will find success both in this world and the next. Otherwise, it will not.It is interesting to note that the above prediction of the Qur’an has held true. In spite of our tremendous technological and socio-economic progress, all across the world we can see rising inequality, intolerance, violence and injustice. Most alarming of all is that our planet Earth is being damaged beyond repair by excessive human greed (consumerism).
The Qur’an argues that if humanity makes its first priority anything other than its Creator, then it is bound for ruin and destruction. It’s quite easy to see the truth and logic of this claim. For example, by making economic growth and competition as our first and foremost priority in our collective national lives, we are damaging and destroying this planet at an alarming rate. In our individual lives, by only concerning ourselves with the comfort and luxury of this life and paying no heed to the eternal afterlife, we have become the root cause of unsustainable mass production and the consequent pollution of the environment.
The Qur’an calls for a balance between the spiritual and material in all aspects of our lives; it argues that this balance in the collective mind of humanity is intricately connected to the balance and harmony of this planet. The Qur’an provides a blueprint for us to build a civilisation centered on love and gratitude towards our Creator. According to the Qur’an, following this blueprint is the only way we can remove inequality, injustice and oppression from this planet and find balance, peace and harmony. All other ideologies and systems will lead to dead ends, imbalances and extremes as already proven by history.
As students of the Qur’an, it is our duty to share the inexhaustible treasures of the Qur’an with our fellow human beings. After all, it is a message for humanity.
