60 ‘drug dealers, producers’ held

Law enforcers arrested around 60 people suspected to be involved in sale of narcotics and manufacturing alcohol in the capital during the last 24 hours till Thursday morning.

They launched massive drives at different restaurants, bars, fake alcohol manufacturing factories and residential hotels in the capital and elsewhere in the country.

The law enforcers went for the action after 20 people had died consuming spurious alcohol in the capital and Bogura in the last few days.  A number of such fake alcohol manufacturing factories have grown up in different areas in the capital and elsewhere in the country.  Police arrested eight suspected alcohol traders from different areas in Uttara on Wednesday night.

Uttara Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Kamruzzaman Sardar said eight empty bottles of beer and four empty bottles of different brands of liquor were recovered from the Bamboo Shoot Chinese restaurant in Sector 3 on Wednesday. William Rosario, Shaon, Imran and Shamir Uddin were arrested in the drive.

Earlier on Friday night, two people including a female university student died while drinking liquor in the restaurant.

Kamruzzaman also said that Shahidur Rahman Mizan was arrested along with 44 bottles of foreign liquor of different brands in a raid at Legend Club Limited Bar in Sector 2, Road No. 2, Uttara.

Kawsar Kibria, Mohammad Ripon and Rajan were also arrested along with 60 empty bottles of Hunter beer and an empty foreign liquor bottle from the Airoling Residential Hotel on Rabindra Sarani Road in Sector 3.

Raids were also conducted at Hotel Grand Palace and Hansa Hotel in Sector 9 of Uttara, Hotel Platinum in Sector 11, Habnab Chinese Restaurant in Sector 14 and Lovelin Restaurant on Sector 12. Three cases have been registered against the arrested.

Besides, conducting separate drives, uniform and plain-cloth detective police under Dhaka Metropolitan areas, arrested a total of 51 suspected drug and alcohol dealers from different parts of the capital in the last 24 hours till Thursday morning.

The striking teams also seized 1057 yaba tablets, 70 gram heroin, 15.5 kg ganza, 38 liter local alcohol, 2.5 liter spirit and 303 bottle phensidyl from their possession. 34 cases were filed with different police stations in these connections.

A special instruction has been issued from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner to different police stations under its jurisdiction to strengthen drives against illegal sale of liquor, DMP sources said.

Police busted an alcohol manufacturing factory at Bhatara in the capital.

The striking team also detained six members including two such fake alcohol-manufacturers, Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner at Detective Branch (Gulshan Division) Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said.

“The group used to buy a gallon of spirit from the capital's Mitford area for Tk10,000. To this spirit, they would mix mineral water, sugar, colour and pour the mix in old bottles of foreign liquor. They would sell each bottle in the market at Tk7,000-8,000, the deputy commissioner also said.

People have died drinking this spirit in excess, the officer said.

On Sunday night, at least five people died after taking spurious liquor in Phulbari and Katnarpara area in Bogura.

The deceased were identified as – Ramzan Ali, 60, son of Alimuddin of Puran Bogra in the district town, Sumon Rabidas, 38, son of Premnath, Saju, 55, of Tokapatti in Katnarpara of Bogra town and Mozahar Ali, 70, and Md. Palash, 35, son of Abdul Jalil of Fulbari Sarkar Para area.
