CHATTOGRAM: Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Jabed on Thursday said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is tackling the Covid-19 crisis by taking sufficient initiatives.
The government initiatives are keeping Bangladesh safer than many other countries in the world, he said. The country is moving forward by development of many sectors while it witnessed rise in foreign reserves even amid the pandemic, Jabed said.The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of ‘Cancer Hospital and Research Institute’, which is being implemented by Chattogram Maa-O-Shishu Hospital, in the city’s Agrabad area.
Addressing the programme, Jabed said a cancer hospital with research centre is a must for the people of this region as the number of patients is increasing rapidly.
The cancer hospital should be established in the port city and the initiators should not worry about money as people will surely donate for this project, the minister observed.
“I will provide all out support for the project and try to manage fund from Prime Minister’s fund as well as the businessmen,” he assured. The land minister also announced a decision to donate Tk 5 crore to the cancer hospital on behalf of the United Commercial Bank Limited.
Jabed also focused on ongoing development projects of the government saying that they are expecting to get Padma Bridge, Metro Rail and Bangabandhu Tunnel projects implemented within next few years.
“We achieved self-sufficiency in food and are now expecting to have foreign reserves of 50 billion dollars within next year,” he said.A written message of the Prime Minister was read out while two documentaries on cancer day and hospital building design were also displayed at the programme.
Besides, the donors, including the land minister, donated around Tk 6.5 crore to the cancer hospital fund at the programme.
Chairman of the Cancer Hospital Implementation Committee and local daily Azadi Editor MA Malek, members SM Abu Tayyub, Journalist Abu Sufian, Dr Anjuman Ara Islam, Engineer Ali Ashraf, the hospital Executive Committee Acting President SM Morshed Hossain and Cancer unit head Dr Shafatujjahan were present at the programme among others.
Member Secretary Md Rezaul Karim Azad of the Cancer Hospital Implementation Committee read out a written statement at the press conference.
