Evil forces still active, says Quader

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday said that anti-democratic evil forces are still active at home and abroad.

“Anti-democratic and anti-development evil forces are still active at home and abroad. All have to remain united to strengthen Sheikh Hasina’s hands to fight against these evil forces,” he said.

Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, said this at a virtual briefing from his official residence on parliament premises in the capital.

The minister came up with the remark as Bangladesh has moved four notches up in the Democracy Index-2020 of the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

According to the latest edition of the Index of the EIU, Bangladesh has ranked 76th among 167 countries.

The AL spokesperson alleged that BNP’s undemocratic behavior and politics of conspiracy is the main obstacle in flourishing democracy in Bangladesh.

“Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s undemocratic behavior and politics of conspiracy is the main obstacle in flourishing democracy in the country,” he said.

Talking over EIU’s democracy index, Quader said it is a global recognition of flourishing country’s democracy under Sheikh Haisna-led government when the scope of democracy has almost shrunk in different countries due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Such recognition will further expedite the pace of progress towards democracy under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he said.

Mentioning that alongside with the government, the role of opposition party’s is crucial in march of democracy, Quader said actually the countrymen wants to see BNP as responsible and strong opposition party.

The AL general secretary directed party leaders and activists to form unit committees by holding councils across country except electoral areas where municipal polls will be held in fourth and fifth phases.

He also urged Dhaka City AL’s north and south chapter to form unit committees through the councils.
