BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman was sentenced on Thursday to two years’ imprisonment for making derogatory remarks about Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Narail Judicial Magistrate Court handed down the verdict in a defamation case.The court also fined Tarique Rahman Tk 10,000. In default of the fine payment, he will have to serve six months more in prison.
Earlier, Tarique Rahman was awarded a life-term imprisonment by another court in the August 21 grenade attack case.
According to the case statement, Tarique Rahman dishonoured Bangabandhu by making disparaging remarks about the Father of the Nation at a party programme held in the UK on the occasion of Victory Day in 2014.
As the incident hit headlines, freedom fighter Shahjahan Biswas, also former commander of Kalia Upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad, filed the defamation case against Tarique Rahman.
