Death toll rises to 16 in Bogura

Police on Wednesday arrested four persons suspected to be involved in selling spurious alcohol that caused death of at least 16 people in Bogura district from Sunday to Wednesday.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of the district Ali Ashraf Bhuyian said they arrested four persons raiding different homeo shops in the district.

The arrestees are: Nurunnabi, owner of PM (Parul) Homeo Laboratories, Abdul Khaleque, owner of Mun Homeo Hall, Abu Jewel, employee of Hasan Homeo Pharmacy and Shahidul Alam Sabur, owner of Karatoa Homeo Hall.

A mobile court led by executive magistrates Papiya Sultana and Tasnimuzzaman raided Mun Homeo Hall around 12:00pm and fined Tk2 lakh for keeping date-over and unapproved medicines. A sack of date-over homeopathic medicine was seized. The court also sealed off the homeo shop.

Later, the court raided Mahi Homeo Hall and fined Tk 1.5 lakh for the same offences. Two boxes of medicine were seized from the shop. The seized medicines were destroyed

Meanwhile, a mobile court conducted raids at two homeo shops at Sadar upazila and fined Tk 3.5 lakh.

At least 16 people died after drinking spurious alcohol in Bogura from Sunday to Wednesday.

The deceased are: Sumon Robidas, 38, his father Premnath Robidas, 70, his paternal uncle Ramnath Robidas, 60, Sazu Prong, 49, Palash Mandal, 35, Abdul Jalil, 65, Ramzan Ali, Zulfikar Ali, 55, Abdur Rahim, Mehedi Hasan, Abdur Razzak, Abdul Ahad, Lazu, Mozahar Ali, Abu Kalam and Alamgir Hossain. They are residents of Sadar, Phulbari, Kahalu and other upazilas of the district.

They drank the alcohol purchasing from various homeo shops and other points of the district on Saturday.
