A miscreant allegedly suffocated a teenage girl to death after failing to rape her near the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital early on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Meem, 15, a resident of Kamrangirchar area in Dhaka.

Police arrested the alleged killer Khayer, 36, from the area.

On information, police rushed to the spot and found the victim lying undressed at a place behind the Shaheed Minar, said Mamunur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station.

She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but the doctors on duty declared her dead.

Police arrested Khayer and three other girls who were torturing her.

The OC said that the three girls were friends of the victim. They were staying in a makeshift house behind the Shaheed Minar.

Last night, Khayer proposed Meem that he would like to have immoral act with her, but she disagreed. Later, he tried to rape the girl but failed. At one stage, he suffocated her to death, the officer said. The body was sent to DMCH morgue for autopsy.
