Govt focuses on

potato farming for exports: Razzaque

Agriculture Minister Dr. Muhammad Abdur Razzaque on Wednesday said that government has given importance to increase the cultivation and production of exportable potatoes.

He came up with the remark while visiting a potato seed producing farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) at Domar in Nilphamari.

“More than 10 million tonnes of quality potatoes are produced annually against the demand of 6-7 million tonnes. The demand of this potato in abroad is less due to high water content in it,” he said.

Cultivation of these high yielding, low water content and exportable potato varieties will create immense potential for potato export, said the minister adding that it will increase versatile use of potato.

Moreover, the Agriculture Minister also visited exportable and industries usable potatoes plots, museum of potato crop, dragon and date orchards.

Quality exportable and industries useable potato seed has been producing on 256 acres of land at the BADC farm. Along with this they are also producing seed through contact farming in 28 zones across the country.

Agriculture Secretary Md Mesbahul Islam, BADC Chairman Md Sayedul Islam, Department of Agricultural Extension Director General Md Asadullah, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Director General Dr. Md Shahjahan Kabir, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) Executive Chairman Dr Shaikh Mohammad Bokhtiar, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) Director General Dr Md Nazirul Islam, Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute (BWMRI) Director General Dr Md Israil Hossain, among others, were present on the occasion.
