At least four people drowned after a boat with 26 fishermen capsized in the Bay of Bengal near Saint Martin’s Island on Saturday.

Chairman of Charlakkhya Union Parishad (UP) of Karnafuli upazila Mohammad Ali, also the owner of the boat, said the fishing boat ‘MV Janjabil’ with 26 fishermen on board had ventured into the deep sea a week back from Karnafuli in Chattogram.

“I received the news that the boat had sunk around 4:00am amid dense fog. The incident took place 65 kilometer off St Martin’s coast,” he said.

On receiving information, a team of Coast Guard rushed to the spot and rescued 12 people so far, said Lieutenant Commander Amirul Haque, media officer of Bangladesh Coast Guard headquarters.

“Ten more fishermen are still missing,” boat owner Mohammad Ali said.
