Sirajganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Hasibul Alam has claimed the attack on councillor-elect in Sirajganj municipal polls Tariqul Islam was pre-planned.

“Rival candidate of Tariqul Islam and his supporters planned before the election night to attack on Tariqul Islam if he is elected as the councillor of ward no 6 again in the Sirajganj Municipal Election,” he said.

SP Hasibul Alam disclosed this at a press briefing at Sirajganj Sadar Police Station premises on Friday noon. On Thursday night, police arrested one of the accused of the case Jahidul and then recovered a knife from an abandoned pond in Sirajganj.

During the preliminary interrogation, Jahidul Islam confessed that the opponent candidate Shahadat Hossain Buddin was angry with Tariqul as he was repeatedly defeated by him in the election, the SP said.

Jahidul, along with his wife, went to Sirajganj from Dhaka three days before the election. He took part in the election campaign for two days.

Later, they went to the election centre with all preparations for the attack on the election day. A day before the election, other accused of the case gave him a knife to attack Tariqul and they kept knife, machete and other local arms to the house of another accused. Prior to the announcement of election result, Jahidul with the knife joined Shahadat Hossain Buddin and others in front of the local Shahidganj Government Primary School, Jahidul said the police.

As the result was declared at 7:00pm, a scuffle broke out between supporters of Tariqul and Shahadat. Jahidul stabbed Tariqul resulting death of the newly-elected councillor. Then Jahidul and his wife returned to their house at Dholpur in the city’s Jatrabari.
