Congratulation, Joe Biden

We heartily congratulate Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. on his assumption of power as the 46th President of the United States of America. His inauguration, as is believed by many, marks the end of an era characterised by backward march of US society and negation of whatever bright democratic ideals and traditions that the US people and their forefathers created over their long history. Biden’s swearing-in also signifies the reversal of a process that gave rise to what the new President termed as ‘political extremism, white supremacy and domestic terrorism’.

Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump, during the turbulent years of his rule, followed policies that created deep divides among the people of his country and pitted one section against the other. The immediate-past president isolated his country from friends around the globe and, retreating from commitment to fight global warming, came out of the Paris climate accord and led to his country’s exit from the World Health Organisation. Trump adhered to an anti-immigrant policy and imposed a ban on visitors from several Muslim majority countries.

However, much to the relief of the stakeholders in his country and across the world, the new US President vowed to bring a quick end to the nightmarish experience that his countrymen had to undergo during the Trump administration. We sincerely hope that President Biden will be fully successful in his efforts to bring US society back to track.

Over the years since the US recognition to Bangladesh as a sovereign and independent country, we maintained friendly ties with the government and people of the United States of America on the basis of equality and mutual benefit. During this period, the US also extended cooperation with our development pursuits including preferential trade facilities together with duty-free access of some of our commodities like readymade garments. We hope that the friendly ties between the two countries will be strengthened further and expect that the new administration under Joe Biden will revive for us the GSP facilities and others and help us in our march towards the next levels of development at an accelerated pace.
