Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Tajul Islam on Thursday asked all departments and local government bodies to take measures necessary to check the spread of mosquito populations.

“The populations of culex and other species of mosquitoes have gone up all over the country. So, all the departments and local government bodies will have to take effective steps to relieve people of the mosquito menace all over the country,” he said virtually during an inter-ministerial meeting on mosquito control programme.

The minister also directed the authorities concerned to purchase effective pesticide and strengthen monitoring on the mosquito control activities.

“Mosquitoes become resistant because of using the same pesticide for a long time,” he said.

He complimented the two mayors of Dhaka City Corporation on taking steps to clean up the city canals and destroy mosquito breeding grounds.

“There are mosquitoes in Singapore, Thailand and Japan, but they destroy the breeding grounds for mosquitoes and we are following them,” he said, adding that “If we work in a body, nothing will be challenging for us.”

Among others, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Jahangir Alom and Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Khorshed Alam Sujon took part in the event.
