A mild-to-moderate cold wave is likely to sweep across the country from tomorrow as light rain occurred in different places on Wednesday, a meteorologist said.

Light rain coupled with fog and chilly bites adversely affected people amid the biting cold.

“Light rain and drizzling occurred countrywide on Wednesday and some drizzling may also occur on Thursday (today),” said Arif Hossain, a meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

“Temperature may decline soon after the rain, and a mild cold wave may sweep through the country, especially northern and some southern regions, from tomorrow and it may continue,” he said. A moderate cold wave is likely to sweep across the country from January 28 and temperature may lie between 6 and 8 degrees Celsius, he added.

People, especially the poor and workers, have been suffering since last week for the bone-biting cold accompanied by chilly wind and dense fog.

The lowest temperature was recorded at 11.3 degree Celsius in Sitakundu while the lowest temperature of Dhaka was 16.5 degree Celsius on Wednesday, the Met office said.

The cold spell is causing cold-related diseases, including pneumonia, asthma and respiratory complications, particularly in northern, northeastern and southern districts.

The number of patients with cough, asthma and other cold-related diseases has marked a sharp rise in different parts of the country, hospital sources said.

Normal life and business activities were crippled due to the bone-biting cold. Day labourers and slum-dwellers are suffering much for shortages of warm clothes and most of the time they have to stay idle due to a labour crisis.

Most of the people stay inside homes to save themselves from the biting cold. Sales of warm clothes, room heaters, water heaters, hot pots and other products have risen.

Light rain or drizzle is likely to occur at one or two places over Mymensingh, Sylhet, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and weather may remain mainly dry with partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country, the Met office forecast on Wednesday.

Moderate-to-thick fog may occur over the country during midnight till morning and it may continue at places, it said.

Night temperature may rise slightly and day temperature may fall slightly over the country.
