Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh on Tuesday said they would request Bangladesh Bank to provide a Tk 1 billion loan for bus owners in order to improve the city’s bus service.

“We will write to Bangladesh Bank seeking a Tk 1 billion loan initially at 4 to 4.5 per cent interest rate like other sectors to modernize the bus service,” he said.

He came up with the remarks while briefing reporters after the 15th meeting of Bus Route Rationalization Committee at Nagar Bhaban in the capital.

DSCC Mayor, also the convener of the committee, said that they had an informal meeting with Bangladesh Bank governor in this regard.

At the meeting, Taposh said, they agreed to select four spots — Baghair of Keraniganj, Kanchpur of Narayanganj and Batulia as well as Hemayetpur of Savar — for inter-district bus terminals and the road transport and bridges ministry would be informed about it.

The existing bus terminals in the capital will be used for city buses, he said. The DSCC mayor said they asked Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) to develop a policy to operate buses under a fixed number of companies in consultation with bus owners.

Speaking on the occasion, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said, “We have redesigned the pilot route. It was from Ghatarchar to Motijheel, but now it is from Ghatarchar to Kanchpur.”

DSCC and DNCC engineering departments are working to fix bus bays, bus stops, ticket counters and acquire some land for building traffic infrastructure in the city, added Atiqul.
