‘Robber’ lynched

CHATTOGRAM: An alleged robber was lynched at Sitakunda Upazila in the district on Monday.

Identity of the deceased aged around 55 to 60 years couldn’t be known.

Sources said a group of robbers equipped with firearms attempted to enter a house in Mandaritola area under the upazila. Sensing presence of the robbers, the house owner started screaming for help.

At one stage, the villagers, who were assigned for monitoring criminal activities like robbery in the village, came forward and encircled the robbers’ gang, said the sources.

Later, the robbers and the villagers locked in a clash. The clash left a robber and some four villagers injured.

The rest of the robbers managed to flee the scene.

The injured robber was also given a good beating leaving seriously injured, said Inspector (Investigation) Suman Banik of Sitakunda Police Station. On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and rescued the injured robber around 4:00am.

The robber was sent to Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared him dead, he said.
