1.5m jobs created in ICT sector in 12 yrs: Palak

About 1.5 million jobs have been created in ICT sector in the country in the last 12 years--a large portion in freelancing, said ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak on Sunday.

"Of the total number of jobs in ICT sector, about 0.6 million are freelancers who are using their merit and technology" he said.

He made the disclosure while inaugurating Robi-Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh (ICMAB) Innovation Lab virtually as the chief guest.

Palak said that within just a decade Bangladesh has transformed from a labour driven to technology driven economy.

“There is no alternative to research and innovation if a country wishes to develop its economy,” he commented, while appreciating ICMAB-Robi Innovation Lab.

The Innovation Lab has been set up to expose ICMAB students to the latest digital technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, such as, data analytics, block chain, Internet of Things (IoT) and others.

The Lab will also work as an incubator to bring up real-life business solutions to address the problems faced by the companies.

In order to make the best use of the lab facilities, ICMAB has decided to recognize the time spent by the students for learning, project or research work in connection to the usage of the lab facilities as credit hours.

Students successfully completing the assigned tasks from this lab will be given professional certificates.

ICT Division will give its utmost effort to make sure this innovation lab can operate to its full potential, Palak assured.

Speaking on the occasion, Robi CEO Mahtab Uddin Ahmed said: “We all know very well that the innovative digital technologies are opening up plethora of opportunities for the country thanks to the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

“What we need now is a pool of human resources who are adequately skilled to make the most of the opportunity,” he added.

Robi Chief Information Officer, Asif Naimur Rashid, Chief Human Resources Officer Faisal Imtiaz Khan, Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer, Shahed Alam, ICMAB President Md Jasim Uddin Akond, President of South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA), A K M Delwar Hossain, Chairman, ICT Committee of ICMAB, Md Faruk Shikder, high officials from Robi and ICMAB, among others, were present on the online launching event.
