Traditional Polo Baoa festival held in Sylhet

People are catching fishes in a water body in Bishwanath upazila of Sylhet on Saturday using polo, a traditional fishing trap. Many water bodies dry up in the country during winter. —Reaz Ahmed Sumon

Polo Baoa festival, a traditional occasion of catching fish, was held in Bishwanath upazila of Sylhet district on Saturday.

People of different ages joined the festival in the Borobil of Goahari haor (wetland) under Daulatpur union.

Around 300 people from 15 villages participated in the two-hour long event while over 100 people enjoyed the fishing.

The people participated with different kind of fishing gears such as Polo, Chitka Jal, Ural Jal, Lathi Jal and Thela Jal.

The festival has become an identity of the area. People of different ages take part in the festival, Shafir Ali, one of the participants, said.

It is one of the most ancient occasions in the area. It began around two centuries ago, he said.

Shoal and Boal fishers are caught mainly by the people. Children enjoyed the fishing.
