3 killed as bailey bridge caves in with truck

Three people were killed when a bailey bridge along with an overloaded truck collapsed into water at Kutubchhari in Sadar upazila of Rangamati district on Tuesday morning.

The accident also snapped road communications between Rangamati and Khagrachhari districts.

The deceased could not be identified yet.

Officer-in-charge of Rangamati Kotwali Police Station Kabir Hosssain said the accident took place around 7am when the truck carrying stone was crossing it on its way to Naniarchar in the district.           

On information, firefighters rushed in and recovered the three bodies from the truck, said Station Officer Belal Hossain of Rangamati Fire Service Station.

The bridge collapsed as the truck was overloaded, said Executive Engineer of Rangamati Roads and Highways Department Shah Arefin. "The bridge has to be rebuilt newly. We’re trying to resume the traffic as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile, two people were killed and two others injured as a bus crashed into a battery-run human hauler (locally known as Tomtom) at Balukhali of Ukhiya upazila in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday morning.

The deceased were identified as Monir Ahmed, 22, son of Abdur Rahim, hailing from Ghumdhum Noapara in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban, and human hauler driver Zafar Alam, 28, son of Prokash Abuilla from Palangkhali Battali of the upazila.

Inspector of Ukhiya Shahpuri highway police Marufur Rahman said the Teknaf-bound ‘St Martin Paribahan’ bus smashed into the human hauler on Cox's Bazar-Teknaf road around 8:30am, leaving the duo dead on the spot and two other passengers injured.

The bodies were sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

One of the injured was sent to Chattogram for better treatment while the other was admitted to local Red Crescent Hospital.
