DAE sets target to cultivate Boro on 1.25 hectares in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA: Of the targeted area to be brought under Boro cultivation, 1,25,200 hectares of land in Gaibandha district in the current season.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has fixed a production target of over 4.25-lakh tonnes of clean Boro rice from 1.25 lakh hectares for the district during the current Rabi season.

Talking to the correspondent, Horticulture Specialist of the DAE regional office Masudur Rahman said the farmers are now preparing Boro seedbed to start transplantation of the major cereal crop from third week of the next month.

However, transplantation of Boro seedling will begin in the low-lying lands, beels, haors, flood-prone and riverine areas from first week of December to complete harvest of the crop before beginning of the next rainy season.

To farm the paddy on the land, the farmers prepared seedbed where the healthy and quality seedlings grew and the farmers are expecting desired output against the paddies. Now, the farmers of all the seven upazilas of the district are so much busy in nurturing the seedbed prepared on the low land.

To help the farmers produce quality seedlings of Boro paddy like BRRI Dhan-28 BRRI Dhan-29, BRRI Dhan-50 and BRRI Dhan-58, the seed of the varieties were distributed to the farmers at reasonable rates through BADC and other private firms approved by Seed Certification Agency of the government, said an official of the DAE.

Besides, many of the farmers have prepared seedbed by sowing their own seed not depending on BADC and local markets as they received training on seed preservation from the field level officials of the DAE, said Sahera Banu, district training officer of the DAE.

Talking to the correspondent deputy director of DAE Krishibid Masudur Rahman further said the field level sub assistant agriculture officers were instructed to motivate the farmers so that the farmers are busy with nurturing the seedbed carefully to get quality seedlings from the seed beds.
