‘Drug dealer’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug dealer was killed in an alleged gunfight between police personnel and drug traders in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar on Tuesday night.

The deceased was identified as Khorshed Alam, 22, son of Haji Golam Hossain from Mithapanirchhara area of Teknaf.

The incident took place when Khorshed along with his cohorts tried to snatch his detained brother from police. 

Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Hafizur Rahman said: "The incident happened when a team of police was returning to the station after detaining one Shamsul Alam, who was accused in 11 drug cases, from Rajarchhara area."

As the police team reached Mithapanirchhara area, some accomplices of the detainee set up a road block and carried out an armed attack in a bid to snatch Shamsul from police custody, the OC claimed.

Police members opened fire on the attackers in self-defence, which triggered a shootout.

At one point, Khorshed was caught in the line of fire, which left him dead on the spot while three policemen were also injured, he said, adding that the deceased youth was accused in two cases.
