Six ‘militants’ arrested

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in separate drives arrested six suspected members of banned militant group Ansar al Islam from the capital and other parts of the country.

The detainees were identified as Md Shakil Islam, 19, Md Ashiqur Rahman, 18, Abu Md Obaidullah, 17, Md Toukir Hossain, 14, Arafat Hossain Naim, 19, and Afsanur Rahman Rubel, 31.

RAB-4 Assistant Director ASP Md Ziaur Rahman Chowdhury said, “Acting on a tip-off, several teams of RAB conducted drives in separate areas of Dhaka, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Sirajganj and Rajshahi from Wednesday night to Thursday morning.”

A total of six members of Ansar Al Islam were detained in the raids.

Law enforcers also recovered leaflets and books related to extremism and mobile phones from their possession, he said.

The procedure for taking legal action against the detainees is underway, the police officer added.
