Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the distribution of free textbooks among school students for new academic year 2021 today through a virtual ceremony.

The primer will inaugurate the textbooks distribution through a virtual ceremony through a videoconferencing from her official residence Ganobhaban in the capital.

After the inauguration, the distribution of new textbooks among the students of class I-IX of different schools and madrasas will begin on January 1.

Textbooks are distributed to students on January 1 amid festivity every New Year since 2010, but this will not be held this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.   

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Tuesday said all the students will not get new textbooks on January 1 as the books will be distributed for the students of all classes in 12 consecutive days.

The students will have to go to the educational institutions to receive the books in compliance with health guidelines, said the minister

She also said books will not be distributed to all students on the first day of the New Year. The students of each class will be given the books in three days dividing them into three groups.

The textbooks will be distributed in 12 days among the students to avoid any kind of gathering, the education minister said.

The Awami League-led government has been distributing free textbooks among the pre-primary and secondary students on the first day of every New Year through national textbook festival since 2010.

Over 331.38 crore textbooks were distributed among students from 2010 to 2020.
