First ship docks at Matarbari deep seaport

Chattogram: The first large ship with more than 12-meter draft took a berth at a jetty of Matarbari Deep Seaport at Moheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday.

The vessel ‘MV Venus Triumph,’ carrying materials for under-construction Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-fired Power Project, anchored at the jetty developed for the power plant at around 10.20 am.

The project officials and senior officials of the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) welcomed the first mother vessel at the Matarbari Deep Seaport. The ship brought some 736 tonnes of materials for the power plant from Indonesia.

Earlier, six buoys were set up in the port-channel to ensure safe arrival of the ship. Besides, the specialized ship engaged in laying the pipeline of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation at the bottom of the sea was removed.

The work of the much-awaited ‘Matarbari Port Development Project’ began on November 16 this year. According to port sources, 736 tons of steel structure including beams, columns, girders, towers has been brought in 313 packages for the port project development.

Consultancy firm ‘Nippon Koei Co. Ltd of Japan is working on the project.

Vessels having an 18.5-metre draft and carrying capacity of 8,000 to 10,000 containers will be able to take berth at the new port. Construction of the port will be completed by 2026.

Primarily, the port will be able to handle eight lakh containers and the capacity will be enhanced gradually. Road and rail links will be connected with the port.
