A Bangladeshi court on Monday imposed an interim ban on the use of the domain, facebook.com.bd, in connection with a case filed by the authorities of social media giant Facebook against Bangladeshi firm A-1 Software Ltd.

Dhaka District Judge Shawkat Ali Chowdhury passed the order after hearing the case filed last month.

The ban will be in force until the next hearing on March 9, 2021.

The court also asked the defendants to explain within the next 15 days as to why a permanent ban on the use of the domain should not be imposed, said Public Prosecutor Khandaker Abdul Mannan.

On November 23, Barrister Moksedul Islam, a lawyer appointed by the Facebook authorities, filed the case against the Bangladesh software company and SK Shamsul Alam on charges of running the domain from Bangladesh.

The social media authorities also demanded US$50,000 in demurrage from the defendants.

Facebook claimed that the domain was registered on January 14, 2010 from the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks of Bangladesh.

The matter came to their notice recently when the domain was advertised for sale at US $8 million.
