Eight to die for rape, murder of girl in Ctg

Chattogram: A Chattogram court on Monday sentenced eight persons to death for killing a girl after rape in the city in 2018.

The court of Chattogram Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 Judge Md Jamiul Haider handed down the verdict, said the Tribunal Public Prosecutor (PP) MA Naser. 

The convicts were also fined Tk100,000 each, he said.

The convicts were identified as Md Belal Hossain, 18, Md Rabiul Islam, 16, Md Hasibul Islam, 26, Md Aksan Mia, 18, Md Sujon, 20, Md Meheraj, 32, Manirul Islam, 49, and Shahadat Hossain, 19.

Of them, seven accused were present at the court during the announcement of the verdict while Shahadat is remaining a fugitive.

According to deposition of the case, the accused took the nine-year-old girl Fatema Akter Mim at a residence and strangled her after rape in the city’s Akbar Shah area on January 21 in 2018.  

Later, the victim's mother Rabeya Begum filed a case with Akbar Shah Police Station accusing eight persons. Police pressed charge sheet in 2019.  

After hearing from 19 witnesses, the court handed down the verdict on Monday.

“I am happy with the verdict and wants to see the execution of it,” the plaintiff said.
