Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) will probe alleged irregularities in construction of power transmission line and infrastructure that may shoot up electricity generation cost of 1,320MW Payra coal-fired power plant.

The CAB has taken a decision at its commission meeting in this regard, said a release yesterday.

North-West Power Generation Company Ltd (NWPGCL) and Chinese company CMC are jointly implementing the power project at Payra in Patuakhali district.

According to CAB press release, the consumer rights group has already found some irregularities in its primary investigation.

After primary investigation, the CAB found huge wastage of public money in implementation of the transmission and infrastructure of the Payra power project.

The project will also increase the electricity generation cost that will push up power tariff along with raising the government’s subsidy on power sector, it feared.

The commission decided to investigate the justification of the project and it’s implementation process, role of the implementing organization, development project proposal and inconsistency of the project.
