AL picks candidates for 25 mayoral posts

Ruling Awami League on Saturday picked its mayoral candidates for contesting the first phase elections to 25 municipalities slated for December 28.

The names of the contenders were finalised at a meeting of Awami League’s Local Government Nomination Board, held at Ganabhaban with AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

The Election Commission on November 22 announced that first phase of elections to 25 municipalities would be held on December 28, using the electronic voting machines (EVM).

The last date for filing nomination papers is December 1, while the scrutiny will be done by December 3. The deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers is December 10, according to the polls schedule.

The AL nominated Zakia Sultana (Panchagar), M Kashiruln Alam (Pirganj), M Khawja Moin Uddin (Fulbari), M Ahsanul Huq Chowdhury (Badarganaj) and M Kaziul Islam (Kurigram) in Rangpur Division.

M Rabiul Islam (Puthia), M Abbas Ali (Katakhali), Monir Akther Khan Toru Lodi (Shahjadpur) and Shakhwat Hossain Shakho (Chatmohor) got the nomination under Rajshahi Division.

Al Masum Murshed (Khoksha), Sajat Kumar Biswas (Chalna), and Reazul Islam Zoardar (Chuadanga) have been nominated in Khulna division.

In Barishal division, ABM Golam Kabir (Betagi), A Barek Molla (Kuakata), M Giauddin Bepari (Ujirpur) and M Lokman Hossain Dakua (Bakerganj) got the ticket. SM Iqbal Hossain Suman (Gafargaon) and M Abdul Hannan Talukder (Madan) have been nominated under Mymensingh division.

Biswajit Roy (Dirai), Abul Imam M Kamran Chowdhury (Borolekha) and M Masuduzzaman Masuq (Shayestaganj) and Badiul Alam (Sitakund) have been nominated under Sylhet and Chattagram division respectively.
