Police are making a list of influential people who reportedly helped Monir Hossain, widely known as Golden Monir, in land grabbing, gold smuggling and other crimes since 2001.

“Police already identified many influential politicians and bureaucrats who backed him to become an underworld kingpin,” said sources in the police.

“Some former and incumbent officers of RAJUK and Ministry of Housing and Public Works might face the music for helping Monir in getting RAJUK plots through under-the-table deals,” said a police official seeking anonymity.

Deputy Commissioner of Gulshan Crime Division Sudip Kumar Chakrabarti told journalists at his office on Monday that police found 30 plots belonging to Golden Monir only in the DIT Project at Merul Badda. He owns 170 more plots in various parts in and out of the capital.

Monir managed to get the plots by forging seals and signs of officers of RAJUK and Housing and Public Works Ministry.

The police officer said that they were investigating whether there were any documents against 600 bhories of gold seized from his house.

The DC said Golden Monir gave them important information during the first day of remand. In the meantime, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Secretary Muhammad Delwar Bakht on Monday said they would launch an investigation into the graft allegations against Golden Monir if the allegations are under the schedules of the ACC.

Sources at Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) said that they would investigate the five ‘Prado’ cars seized by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from Monir’s possession. The BRTA will see whether the cars have documents and how they were imported.

Sources at RAB said that they found 25 bank accounts of Golden Monir in which Tk 5.18 crore was transacted and the accounts have a balance of Tk 4.12 crore.

Local people said that Monir was a cadre of BNP Dhaka Metropolitan North Unit President and former Commissioner MA Kaium.

Later he formed a cadre group of his own.

RAB has arrested ‘notorious gold smuggler-cum-hundi trader’ Monir Hossain alias Golden Monir from his duplex residence at Merul Badda in the capital with 600 bhorie of gold, five luxurious cars worth Tk 150 million and Tk 11 million in cash.

A Mobile Court of the RAB led by Executive Magistrate Palash Kumar Basu conducted the drive at his house No. 41 and road No.13 at Merul Badda and his car shop, Auto Car Selection, on Progati Sarani between Friday night and Saturday morning.

The force also seized a foreign pistol, four rounds of bullet, four litres of foreign wine, 32 fake SIMs, 20,500 Saudi riyal, 501 US dollar, 500 Chinese yuan, 520 rupees, 1,000 Singaporean dollars, 2.80 lakh Japanese yuan, 92 Malaysian ringgit, 10 Hong Kong dollar, 10 UI dirham and 660 Thai baht from his six-storey house.

On Sunday, two Dhaka courts placed him on 18-day remand in three cases filed with Badda Police Station.
