The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has constituted an 11-member committee consisting of its officials, researchers and freedom fighters to scrutinise and finalise the list of intellectuals, who made the supreme sacrifice during the War of Liberation in 1971.

The ministry issued a notification on November 19 in this regard, according to a press release, signed by its Senior Information Officer Sufi Abdullahil Maruf, which was issued on Monday.

The Pakistan occupation forces and their local collaborators systematically killed country’s renowned academicians, doctors, engineers, journalists, artistes, teachers and other eminent personalities during the War of Liberation in 1971.

The government has now moved to prepare a list of the genuine martyred intellectuals.

Liberation War Affairs Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh is leading the panel while Additional Secretary Md Shahidul Haque Bhuiyan was selected as a member and Deputy Secretary Rathindranath Datta is acting as the member secretary, it said.

Those who were inducted into the committee as researchers are Prof Muntassir Mamoon and Prof Mejbah Kamal of Dhaka University, President of Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Shahriar Kabir, Director of the National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSOM) Prof Dr Baizid Khoorshid Riaz, Trustee of Genocide-Torture Archive and Museum Dr Chowdhury Shahid Quader and its researcher Gazi Salauddin.

Filmmaker and cultural personality Nasiruddin Yousuff Bachchu and Lt Col (retd) Quazi Sajjad Zahir Bir Pratik are there in the committee as freedom fighters.

The committee will scrutinise the list of martyred intellectuals, provide their names and addresses, and put forward necessary recommendations, according to the release.

It will also give the definition of martyred intellectuals and determine who among the martyrs of the War of Liberation will be regarded as martyred intellectuals, the release added.

The panel members will prepare the list through gathering information obtained from various research books, newspaper and magazine cuttings, TV reports and other sources, it said.

Besides, the committee will go through the applications of individuals received from different ministries, departments, organisations, districts, upazilas and other sources and recommend the names for inclusion in the list of martyred intellectuals.
