RANGPUR: Officials and experts at a training programme here have laid emphasis on prioritising children issues in the urban disaster risk reduction process terming children as the most vulnerable groups during natural disasters.
They made the observation at the day-long training programme styled ‘Child-centred disaster risk reduction’ organised by Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) on Monday as part of the UNICEF supported urban programme in Rangpur city, reports BSS.Members of Rangpur City Corporation’s disaster management committee participated in the training programme held at RDRS Begum Rokeya auditorium of RDRS Bangladesh in the city.
Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa spoke in the training inauguration session as the chief guest with Secretary of RpCC Rashedul Islam in the chair.
Chief of UNICEF for Rangpur Field Office Najibullah Hameem as the special guest addressed the event.
Prominent disaster management expert Moloy Chaki conducted different sessions for the participants in the training programme.
Chief Health Officer of RpCC Dr Kamruzzaman Ibne Taz also spoke.
Najibullah said children are among the most vulnerable groups when natural disasters and calamities take place and so why greater resilience to disasters requires children’s voices are heard.“The children issues need to be prioritized in the comprehensive disaster risk reduction process in urban areas,” he said.
Najibullah appreciated Mayor of Rangpur for encouraging children’s participation which is also in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and assured of UNICEF support in strengthening children issues in development programmes.
City Mayor Mostafizar Rahman committed to extend all possible supports for the children and welcomed suggestions from disaster management committee members for inclusion of children issues in disaster risk reduction activities for Rangpur city.
He reiterated his continuous support and assistance and gave emphasis on collective efforts towards making a child friendly Rangpur city.
Mayor also promised to take necessary action to further strengthen Rangpur city disaster management activities and emphasized on more coordination among sectoral agencies to increase service preparedness in disaster context.
