Keraniganj OC, 8 others sued for extortion

A businessman on Thursday filed a case against nine people, including OC of South Keraniganj Police Station, with a Dhaka court on extortion and abduction charges.

Mohammad Akhter Hossain, a generator businessman of Kaliganj under Keraniganj, filed the case with Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

The accused are Chairman of Shubadda Union Parishad Iqbal Hossain, Sharif Ahmed Sumon, Shahbuddin Captain, Sultan, Babul Bepari, Sazu Chowdhury, Mohammad Khairul, Mohammad Hasan and OC of the police station Shahjaman. The court received the case and ordered the SP of Dhaka district to carry out an investigation into the matter.

Akhter Hossain told the Daily Sun that he was operating two generators at Nur Market and Kaliganj Bazar in Shubadda.  Last year, Iqbal through his cohorts demanded Tk one crore as extortion from him to run the generators.

“As I did not pay the amount, the fellows of Iqbal forcibly took control over my two generators, huge wires worth Tk 80 lakh and lines about 17 months ago.

“Later, I filed a case with a Dhaka court.  After filing the case, the accused threatened me of terrible consequence. On October 3, the fellows of chairman picked up the witness of the case named Delwar and tortured him mercilessly.
